Trade Unions and Civil Society Push for Just Transition at Africa Climate Summit in Ethiopia

The People’s Assembly is designed as a space where labour movements and civil society co-create innovative strategies to ensure climate action delivers justice, equity, and resilience. Their joint agenda prioritizes adaptation, resilience, clean energy access, and the phase-out of fossil fuels.

For unions and civil society groups, the moment is decisive. They stress that Africa must move beyond extractive, oil- and gas-dependent models of development, calling instead for a just transition that guarantees decent work, economic prosperity, and energy and food sovereignty for communities across the continent.

They take this Summit as a vital moment to collectively influence the continent’s climate and development agenda – one that puts adaptation, resilience, fossil fuel phase-out, and equitable access to clean energy at its core.

By working collectively, trade unions, community movements, and CSOs aim to influence Africa’s climate and development agenda while ensuring the commitments of the Nairobi Declaration are advanced.

For them, ACS2 represents an opportunity to move from policy talk to concrete action that protects people, livelihoods, and the planet.
