Rwanda Calls on UN to Condemn Hate Speech and resolve Root Causes of Conflicts

These remarks were announced by Rwanda’s Defence and Security Advisor to the UN, Col Deo Mutabazi, during the opening session of the Committee committed to peacekeeping operations at the UN Headquarters in New York.

He pointed out that peacekeeping mandates must be aligned with adequate and sustainable resources to ensure their effective and efficient implementation.

Col Mutabazi further underscored the need to address the root causes of conflicts and to improve coordination within the UN system, underlining that complicated political crises require political solutions rather than an overdependance on military responses.

On the issue of hate speech, he alarmed that failure to denounce it may be considered as endorsement or complicity, which undermines the suffering of victims. He called on UN Member States to integrate the fight against hate speech into strategies aimed at protecting civilians.

He also highlighted the importance of gender equality in peacekeeping efforts, reinforcing that peacekeeping without the full participation of women can't achieve meaningful and sustainable impact.
