Rwandans in Germany Unite in Hannover to Honor Women’s Achievements
Rwandans living in Germany gathered in Hannover on March 8 to celebrate International Women’s Day, honoring the achievements and leadership of women while strengthening unity within the diaspora and highlighting Rwanda’s global example in promoting gender equality.
The celebration brought together members of the Rwandan diaspora, families, community leaders, and friends to honor the vital role women play both within their communities and in the wider world. The event served as both a celebration and a moment of reflection on the progress women have made and the need to continue supporting gender equality.
Activities began a day earlier, on March 7, with a community dinner organized by Rwandans living in Hannover. The gathering created a warm and welcoming environment where participants shared meals, reconnected, and strengthened bonds within the diaspora ahead of the main celebration.
The event was also attended by Rwanda’s Ambassador to Germany, Amb Igor Cesar, and his spouse, who joined the community in celebrating the achievements of women. In his remarks, the Ambassador praised the critical role women play in building strong families and communities both in Rwanda and abroad.
“International Women’s Day reminds us that the progress of any nation is closely linked to the empowerment of its women. Rwandan women have shown extraordinary resilience and leadership, and their contribution continues to shape a brighter future for our society,” Amb Cesar said.
Speakers highlighted the progress women have made in areas such as education, leadership, business, and community development. They also emphasized the importance of continuing to empower women and girls so they can fully realize their potential.
Participants also noted the growing number of Rwandans living in Germany in recent years, driven by opportunities for education, vocational training, and employment. Many travel through legal migration pathways including university studies, vocational training programs, volunteer opportunities, language-learning initiatives, and family reunification.
The celebration in Hannover also reflected Rwanda’s strong record in promoting gender equality. Women hold more than 60 percent of seats in Rwanda’s national parliament, the highest level of female representation in the world.
