Meteo Rwanda Warns of Above-Average Rainfall in February 2026, Urges Preventive Measures
Rwanda Meteorology Agency (Meteo Rwanda) has announced that February 2026 is expected to record above-average rainfall across the country, ranging between 80 and 360 millimeters, due to increased atmospheric moisture mainly driven by winds from the western Indian Ocean, prompting authorities to urge citizens to take precautionary measures against possible weather-related risks.
According to Meteo Rwanda, the forecasted rainfall for February 2026 exceeds the normal seasonal average, which typically ranges between 40 and 259 millimeters. The highest amounts, between 290 and 360 millimeters, are expected in several districts, including Rubavu, Musanze, Nyaruguru, Burera, Gakenke, Huye, Gisagara and Nyamagabe.
Other districts across the country are forecast to receive rainfall ranging from 220 to 290 millimeters. Nyagatare District, in the Eastern Province, is expected to record comparatively lower rainfall levels, estimated between 80 and 150 millimeters.
Meteo Rwanda further indicated that strong winds are expected nationwide, with speeds ranging from 8 to 12 meters per second. In terms of temperature, higher maximum temperatures, between 28 and 30 degrees Celsius, are forecast in the Eastern and Southern provinces, the City of Kigali, and the Bugarama plain.
Given that the anticipated heavy rainfall may be accompanied by thunderstorms, particularly in the Western, Southern and Northern provinces as well as in the City of Kigali, Meteo Rwanda has called on Rwandans to remain vigilant and to implement appropriate measures to reduce the impacts of severe weather conditions.
