Over 5,000 Attend First-Ever Kivu Beach Expo & Festival in Rutsiro
Thousands of residents and visitors gathered at Palega Beach Inn in Boneza Sector, Rutsiro District, for the inaugural Kivu Beach Expo & Festival, a vibrant event aimed at boosting domestic tourism and showcasing Made-in-Rwanda products along the scenic shores of Lake Kivu.
The festival, organized by Yirunga Ltd in partnership with the Rutsiro District, kicked off on December 9, 2025, marking a historic milestone for the region. More than 5,000 people attended, including visitors from Bugarura Island, home to about 2,000 residents who can only travel by boat.
The opening day featured electrifying performances, including a debut show in Rutsiro by popular artist Igisupusupu, who thrilled the crowd with his signature style. Over 50 exhibitors displayed locally made products such as crafts, beverages, coffee, and honey. Boneza Coffee and KOPAKAMA Cooperative offered fresh coffee tastings, while Rutsiro Honey introduced a new beverage brand called “Umunezero.”
Local hotels, including Palega Beach Inn, Amara Kivu Resort, and Rushel Kivu Resort, slashed food and drink prices by up to 50 percent to encourage local participation. Residents expressed joy at experiencing hotel leisure for the first time, saying the event inspired them to explore their district more often.
The festival continues through December 14 with various activities hosted across lakeside resorts, from a three-day Boat Party to volleyball, swimming competitions, triathlon races, hiking, and Badminton tournaments.
Yirunga Ltd. CEO Yves Iyaremye praised Rwanda’s leadership for ensuring peace and opportunities for youth entrepreneurship.
“The joy and energy I’ve seen here are unmatched. We’ll continue organizing more festivals in Rutsiro because they bring happiness and shared benefits,” he said.
Rutsiro District Mayor, Mrs Dativa Kayitesi, revealed collaboration behind the event, saying it proved that well-prepared local initiatives can have a major impact.
“This is the first time we’ve experienced such excitement here. We’ll keep supporting activities that unite people and promote our district’s beauty,” she noted.
The Kivu Beach Expo & Festival blends culture, business, and recreation, offering exhibitions, traditional showcases, children’s entertainment, and live performances, with Young Grace headlining the next concert on December 10, 2025.
