Conservation agriculture boosts harvests and climate resilience in Rwanda

Conservation agriculture is one of the most effective ways for farmers to increase productivity, protect soil from erosion, and adapt to climate change. Promoting these practices is key to building sustainable food systems and strengthening communities against climate impacts, as the experts revealed.

The approach is based on three core principles: minimal soil disturbance, permanent soil cover, and crop diversification through rotation or intercropping. By following these principles, farmers maintain healthy soils, improve water retention, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, resulting in higher and more sustainable yields.

To support adoption, the Rwanda Environment Management Authority (REMA), through its Climate-Proofing Project (LDCF3), organized a study tour at the Rwanda Institute for Conservation Agriculture (RICA) on Tuesday, 21st October 2025, bringing together agronomists from Kirehe and Gakenke Districts.

The agronomists will now help farmers in their districts implement conservation agriculture practices, strengthening resilience to climate change and promoting sustainable agricultural development.
