Rwanda’s Parliament rejects EU resolution on judiciary and sovereignty
Rwanda’s Chamber of Deputies has strongly rejected a resolution passed by the European Union Parliament calling, among other things, for the release of Victoire Ingabire Umuhoza, who is currently facing trial.
Lawmakers described the EU resolution as disrespectful to Rwandans, undermining the independence of the judiciary and violating the country’s sovereignty.
On Monday, the Senate also convened to review the EU resolution and issued a similar stance, condemning it as an intrusion into Rwanda’s internal affairs.
Senators stressed that Rwanda is a sovereign state governed by its own laws and leadership, determined solely by its citizens.
They further underscored that no foreign entity has the authority to interfere with the country’s judicial processes, warning against attempts to use Rwanda’s politics for interests that do not benefit its people.
