Empowering Rural Women: A Crucial Frontline for Climate and Gender Equality

Rural women stand as vital protectors of the environment and powerful agents of gender equality, yet they face some of the harshest impacts from climate change, poverty, and food insecurity. On this International Day of Rural Women, it is urgent to recognize their central role in sustainable development and the pressing need to invest in their empowerment.

Women in rural areas feed communities, nurture the land, and lead grassroots efforts to combat climate change. Despite this, they often encounter limited access to resources, education, and decision-making platforms. Around 351 million women and girls are projected to remain in extreme poverty by 2030 unless targeted actions address these disparities.

The story of Verene Ntakirutimana from Rwanda exemplifies the transformative potential of rural women’s empowerment. Supported by the Joint Programme on Rural Women’s Economic Empowerment, Verene moved beyond subsistence farming to establish a thriving small business.

Her success challenged local stereotypes, fostered shared decision-making, and inspired many women to pursue economic independence and leadership roles within their communities.

This year’s theme, “Rural Women Rising,” calls for urgent and sustained efforts to improve rural women’s livelihoods, leadership, and rights, goals embedded in the Beijing+30 Action Agenda.

Global initiatives like the International Year of Women Farmers 2026 and the Inter-American Decade for the Rights of All Women, Adolescents, and Girls in Rural Settings (2024–2034) offer strategic platforms to amplify their voices and influence policies that affect them.

When rural women rise, they not only protect environments but also drive social change, foster food security, and accelerate progress toward gender equality. Empowering them is indispensable to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and securing a more just, resilient future for all.
