Solar Energy Irrigation Boosts Potato Harvests During Dry Season ( Photos)
Farmers in Musaza Sector, Kirehe District, Eastern Province, have managed to harvest potatoes even during the recent dry season, thanks to a solar-powered irrigation system introduced under REMA’s LDCF3 Project.
The solar-powered irrigation system, currently covering 80 hectares, has turned drought-prone land in Musaza into productive potato fields.
Implemented by the Rwanda Environment Management Authority (REMA) with support from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) through UNDP Rwanda, the LDCF3Project showcases how climate adaptation can sustain agriculture across Rwanda during prolonged dry spells.
Innovation has strengthened food security and resilience, ensuring stable harvests despite limited rainfall to the local farmers.
With plans to expand the irrigated area from 80 to 120 hectares in the near future, the project is set to benefit more families and further boost livelihoods in Kirehe District and beyond.
