Kivu Beach Expo & Festival Positions Rutsiro as a Rising Tourism and Investment Hub
Rutsiro District has emerged as one of the biggest beneficiaries of the 2025 Kivu Beach Expo and Festival, with the event significantly boosting tourism, local business activity and investment visibility. Organized by Yirunga Ltd and held across Lake Kivu districts, the festival concluded in Rutsiro, where strong leadership support, high attendance and diversified activities translated into measurable economic and social impact, despite challenges linked to mindset and coordination.
Rutsiro hosted the final leg of the festival in an atmosphere of strong institutional backing. District authorities worked closely with organizers to ensure smooth implementation. This collaboration enhanced investor confidence and encouraged participation from local entrepreneurs, hoteliers and service providers. Organizers said the supportive environment reduced operational barriers and increased overall efficiency.
Yves Iyamuremye, Director of Yirunga Ltd, said Rutsiro set a positive example for partnership-driven tourism development.
“In Rutsiro, we truly felt at home because local leaders welcomed us and partners clearly understood the value of working together to achieve success,” he said.
He added that while the festival was successful, one of the main challenges encountered elsewhere was resistance to a new concept.
“Mindset remains the biggest challenge when people are introduced to something they are not yet familiar with,” he noted.
Rutsiro Records Tourism and Economic Gains from the Festival
The economic impact of the festival in Rutsiro was visible across multiple sectors. Hotels, restaurants and transport services reported increased demand during the event period.

Informal traders, artisans and small businesses benefited from higher foot traffic, while exhibitors gained direct exposure to potential clients and investors. The influx of visitors also strengthened the district’s image as a viable tourism destination along Lake Kivu.
Sports tourism activities further diversified economic opportunities. Events such as triathlon competitions, beach volleyball, swimming, badminton and traditional canoe races attracted both participants and spectators.
Some of these activities were organized for the first time in Rutsiro, opening new revenue streams and positioning the district for future sports-related tourism investments.
Entertainment events significantly boosted spending. Performances by popular artists at Palega Beach Inn drew thousands of fans. On the day musician Theo Bosebabireba performed, attendance was estimated at between 12,000 and 15,000 people. This surge increased sales for food vendors, accommodation facilities and transport operators, amplifying the festival’s economic footprint.

Rutsiro District Mayor Kayitesi Dative said the festival aligned with the district’s development goals. “Kivu Beach Expo and Festival has given us a platform to showcase our tourism potential, investment opportunities and the creativity of our people,” she said. She emphasized the need to make the festival an annual event to sustain economic growth, attract long-term investment and create jobs, particularly for youth and women.
