Heavy rains and strong winds expected across Rwanda in September
Rwanda is set to experience heavier-than-usual rainfall and strong winds throughout September 2025, according to the latest forecast by Meteo Rwanda. Rainfall is predicted to range between 35 and 230 millimeters, surpassing the long-term average of 35 to 200 mm for the month.
The highest rainfall, between 195 and 230 mm, is expected in Rusizi, Nyamasheke, Rutsiro and Rubavu Districts; it is also expected in Karongi, Nyabihu, Musanze and Ngororero Districts excluding the their eastern parts, central and northern parts of Burera District, and in Nyamagabe and Nyaruguru Districts.
Rainfall ranging between 155 and 195 mm is predicted in Muhanga, Gakenke and Rulindo Districts, northern parts of Gicumbi District, northern and western parts of Kamonyi, Ruhango and Nyanza Districts, central parts of Nyaruguru District, as well as the remaining parts of Burera, Musanze, Nyabihu, Ngororero, Karongi, and Nyamagabe Districts.
Rainfall amount ranging between 115 and 155 mm is expected in Huye District, Gasabo and Nyagatare Districts except in their southern parts, western parts of Gatsibo and Gisagara Districts, northern parts of Nyarugenge District, central parts of Nyanza, Ruhango, and Kamonyi Districts, along with the remaining parts of Gicumbi and Nyaruguru Districts.
Meanwhile, Kigali, parts of Eastern Province, such as Rwamagana and Gatsibo, Northern of Bugesera, Ngoma Districts, and the parts of Southern province such as Ruhango, Kamonyi, central of Gisagara aand Nyanza Districts, are forecasted to receive moderate amounts ranging between 75 and 115 mm. Some areas in the east may receive as little as 35 to 75 mm.
Temperatures will remain within normal seasonal ranges, with daytime highs between 18°C and 32°C. The warmest conditions are expected in Kigali, Bugesera, Ngoma, Kayonza, and Nyagatare, while cooler conditions will dominate western Musanze and northern Nyabihu, with highs of just 18–20°C. Nighttime lows could drop to between 6°C and 8°C in parts of Musanze, Nyamagabe, Nyaruguru, and Rusizi.
Strong winds, ranging from 8 to 12 meters per second, are expected in several districts, including Rubavu, Rutsiro, Karongi, Nyamasheke, Musanze, Rusizi, Burera, Kayonza, Nyagatare, and Gatsibo.
Meteo Rwanda has warned that thunderstorms and strong winds may cause disruptions, urging residents to take necessary precautions to minimize risks.
