SteelRwa Factory in Rwamagana temporarily suspended over Persistent Air Pollution

This decision taken after the inspection, conducted on October 17, 2025, revealed the factory emits excessive fumes & and smoke, which spread to neighbouring areas, creating smog.

"The inspection also found that no adequate emission control measures in place, and there is lack of secondary extraction system to control fugitive smoke that escapes the factory’s fume extraction system," REMA said in a statement posted on its official X (formerly Twitter) account on Sunday, October 19, 2025.

REMA revealed that the same unlawful activities were also observed on 11th September 2025.

Residents living near the factory have repeatedly complained several times about the thick smoke, saying it could cause discomfort and serious health risks such as respiratory diseases.

Despite multiple warnings and fines issued since 2021 for violating air pollution regulations, SteelRwa has made no tangible efforts to reduce emissions or protect the health of nearby residents, according to REMA.

“On several occasions, SteelRwa factory has been warned about air pollution violations and fined for failing to comply with environmental regulations. Despite this, since 2021, there has been no improvement in reducing emissions or safeguarding the health of the nearby community," REMA said.

The decision has been welcomed by X users. One identified as Sam has commented, “Thanks for the great decision, it has been hazard since couple of years ago."
