EAC: Somalia deposits its instrument of ratification of the Treaty in Arusha
This Monday, March 4, 2024, The Republic of Somalia deposited its instrument of ratification of the treaty of accession with EAC Secretary General, Dr. Peter Mathuki making the Horn of Africa country the bloc’s 8th Partner State.
A higher level of delegation led by Somalia’s Minister of Commerce and Industry, Hon. Jibril Abdirashid Haji Abdi, is in Arusha-Tanzania to deposit the instrument with EAC, Ho. (Dr.) Mathuki Peter at the EAC’s Headquarters.
The treaty of accession was signed by Somalia’s President Sheikh Hassan and the Chairperson of the summit of EAC Heads of State, H.E Salva Kiir Mayardit, who is also the president of the Republic of South Sudan in Entebbe, Uganda on 15th December, 2023.
The signing ceremony was witnessed by Uganda President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
The Secretary-General will inform Somalia in writing that the new member has deposited the instrument of ratification of the treaty of accession and is a full member of the Community, according to Article 153(01) of the EAC Treaty.
In Article 153 (03), The Secretary-General will deposit the treaty of accession with the African Union and the United Nations expressing the new member's commitment to be bound by the Treaty.
Somalia joins the other seven partner states: Burundi, RDC, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, and South Sudan, while this region has been in conflict for a long time.
